Ingredients

In every Signature book

  • 1painted coverAI-assisted watercolor made from your family photo, with your family's name
  • 40recipestranscribed from cards, pages, links and notes, and checked at every batch size
  • 1address of its ownlike hartwell.inkandoven.com; anyone you share the link with can open it, and search engines are told to stay away
  • 1app on every phoneadded to the home screen, and it works without a signal
  • 1dedicationthe first page each person sees
  • 1letterpress cardwith the book's address and a QR code, to wrap with the gift
  • 1 yearof carewith up to 10 new recipes

Method

  1. Open a recipe and pick a batch size. Tap 2× and every amount changes in the measures your kitchen uses: halve ¾ cup and it says ¼ cup + 2 tbsp.
  2. Start the timer that sits in the step. Several can run at once.
  3. Open the cooking view for one step at a time, in big type, with the screen kept awake.
  4. Add a few recipes to the shopping list. It writes one list for all of them, sorted by aisle.
  5. Try it now in the sample chapter.

Every book is built on the software we first wrote for our own family's cookbook.

Our sample recipes are being cooked and photographed now. They'll appear here with batch sizes, timers and the shopping list all working.

What you send us

  • allyour recipesin any form: handwritten cards, cookbook pages, screenshots, links, a voice memo of how Grandma makes it
  • 1family photofor the cover
  • a few linesof dedicationif you'd like the book to open with one
  • anydish photos you havea recipe without one gets a space for a photo later
  • eachrecipe's sourceso its page can say "From Grandma Ruth"

Method

  1. Gathering. A twenty-minute call about your family's recipes, who cooks what, and the occasion. We agree every date with you before you pay anything; half the price then holds your month. Send whatever you have: a shared folder or a string of texts both work.
  2. Transcribing. We type every recipe, write its steps out plainly, and check each amount at every batch size. When a card leaves something out, like how much flour, we ask you. We never guess.
  3. Painting the cover. Your family photo becomes an AI-assisted watercolor with the book's title set above it, with two rounds of changes.
    Weeks 1–2
  4. Proofs. A private link to the whole book. Cook from it, read it on the couch, and tell us what's wrong.
    Weeks 3–5
  5. Binding. The book goes live at its own address, and we help everyone in the family put it on their phones.
    Weeks 4–6
  6. The dedication and the card. The first time each person opens the book, it opens to your few lines. A letterpress card with the book's address and a QR code comes in the mail.
    At launch

Colophon

Made by Ink & Oven.

This book is set in Fraunces and Source Sans 3, the type of every Ink & Oven cookbook. Covers are lettered in Bodoni Moda, and our notes are in Reenie Beanie. The paintings are AI-assisted watercolors.

It sets no cookies, runs no trackers, and loads nothing from anyone else's servers.

Notes

  1. The sample chapter's recipes and photos are ours. In your book the dish photos are your own; when a recipe comes from a cookbook, a website or a meal kit, its page credits the source and the method is rewritten in our words.
  2. The standard cover is AI-assisted watercolor made from your family photo. If you'd rather an illustrator paint it by hand, that's $500 more.
  3. The recipes and photos you send for your book stay yours, and we use them only to make and update it.
